I love wool. I’ve been wearing and caring for wool for over twenty years, and I continue to be amazed by the myriad of properties this fiber possesses. One of my favorite sweaters is a bulky, cable-knit Shetland wool sweater…that was purchased in the 80s. Somehow, my prized sweater has been able to escape the wrath of hungry moths and provide fashionable warmth season after season. From classic suits to cloth diapering, wool is a miracle fiber fit for both fashion and function.
Wool is great for everything, from diapering to laundering, and here are a few reasons why:
- wool can absorb up to 30% of it’s weight in water without feeling damp or clammy, and it retains 70% of its insulation qualities when wet
- wool is great at regulating temperature: Wool is the only known fiber that can help the wearer regulate body temperature in a wide range of temperatures. It is capable of keeping the wearer warm in winter and cool in summer.
- wool resists absorbing odors & readily disperses them
- wool is biodegradable
- wool is self-cleaning: Lanolin on wool interacts with the ammonia in urine to form a soap. This makes wool covers ‘self-cleaning’. Just hang them to air dry and they will stay fresh smelling for several uses. About once every week or so they can be handwashed in a lanolin rich soap. Every 3-4 weeks they will need lanolized to restore their amazing ability to neutralize urine odors.
With all of these wonderful properties, it’s no surprise that wool dryer balls became a regular part of my laundry routine once my son arrived. Sensitive baby skin, combined with a desire to go natural in most areas of our household, meant switching out our chemical-laden dryer sheets for all-natural wool dryer balls. Not only were my clothes (and diapers) coming out of the dryer with little to no static, our drying time was reduced by a quarter (yes, I actually tested this).
Eco Nuts sent me a set of their wool dryer balls to give a tumble, and I’m happy to share some of the reasons why you should consider making the switch to a more natural laundering routine.
Why Eco Nuts Wool Dryer Balls?
Eco Nuts wool dryer balls are made from 100% felted wool, and are a viable, natural, and effective way to soften your laundry, reduce your drying time, keep pesky wrinkles at bay, and are the perfect compliment to a natural laundering routine. (Pair with Eco Nuts natural laundry soap, and you’ll have completely natural laundering routine set in place)
How do Eco Nuts Wool Dryer Balls work?
Wool dryer balls tumble through your clothing, linens, [and cloth diapers], separating articles and allowing air to circulate through them more effectively. Because wool dryer balls are all natural, your clothing will be soft and free of wrinkles without a soapy, chemical-based coating or cloying artificial scents. If the scent from fabric softener or dryer sheets is what you’re after, simply add a few drops of your favorite essential oil (I’m a fan of lavender oil, myself) to your wool dryer balls and pop them in with your dryer load. The best part of using wool dryer balls is that your drying time will be reduced, up to 25%!
Chemical free, energy & cost savings, and biodegradable, you’ll feel good about yourself for making the switch to Eco Nuts Wool Dryer Balls!

I am currently making some DIY Wool dryer balls, if is does not work as planned I will definitely be trying these.
I LOVE wool dryer balls! I now use them for all of our laundry! They dry things so much quicker and are so much easier to use since we just leave them in the dryer.
Love wool dryer balls. I never thought I’d be able to give up fabric softener but really wanted to after I learned about all the potentially harmful chemicals in them. Two years later and I don’t miss it at all!
This is on my wish list for black Friday. I hope to find a good deal on them! I read how chemically saturated dryer sheets are, and since I will be using cloth diapers on my first baby, then I would really love some in order to dry the inserts and prefolds! I also heard they are great for static! Thank you!
Ty for the info I really want to try some dryer balls
I have always wanted to try these! I want to ditch my dryer sheets and go natural! This brand looks like a good one-thanks for the great review!
I just heard of these not too long ago and I am so curious about them! I would love to try these out! I am so impressed by how many loads they are suppose to last you for and I think that is great!
We are expecting our firstborn in February and will be cloth diapering from the start. For the last 5 years+, we have been using dryer balls rather than fabric softener or dryer sheets, but they are made of a plastic material. Wool would be so much better! I didn’t know wool dryer balls existed until recently; your blog post provided valuable information as to why they are a much better option. I will definitely be investing in these. Thank you!
I love using dryer balls. I didn’t know that wool was self-cleaning. Thanks for sharing this review.
These would be great! I really need to get some.
I am very excited about using these. I have heard a lot of cd moms talk about them lately and it sounds like it is worth a try! Thanks for sharing!
I’ve used dryer balls, but have never tried the wool balls!!?
I would to try these!
I had no idea that wool dryer balls could speed up drying time! I would love to get some of these, since my husband loves fabric softeners, but I can’t stand dryer sheets or other similar products.
My husband was a dryer sheet addict! It took him a while to ditch the dryer sheets (he does his own laundry) and come over to the wooly side 😉
I did not know all of this about wool! I have heard that a lot of people use it for nighttime because of the absorbency, but I really had no idea about it cleaning itself naturally! I will definitely have to get some to use with my baby, due in January!
I think a lot of people are intimidated by wool in cloth diapering because they believe it requires extra care. The reality is that you need only handwash your wool every few weeks, and lanolizing isn’t difficult at all (many companies now put lanolin in their wool washes, so it’s even easier).
Ive heard in the cd community about using wool dryer balls but i never knew the exact benefits of this. Now I want some
