I recently shared some tips to be prepared for the winter storms headed our way this year in my winter emergency preparedness piece. I discussed child-friendly ways to light and heat our home, in the event of a power outage, as well as other items to have on hand [in the event of an extended power outage]. Candles are not a safe option for our toddler, and flashlights only provide limited lighting, so I wanted a lantern that did not have lighted mantles or wicks. I found the perfect safe lighting option in the HybridLight solar lantern. The Ultimate Green Store was kind enough to send me a HybridLight to test, for inclusion in my winter emergency preparedness plan, and I couldn’t be more pleased with the results!
HybridLight’s Solar Lantern provides three ways to keep the light glowing: charged with solar power, backup battery power, and a USB charge and adapter and for easy charging. What really makes this lantern extraordinary is the fact that you can recharge with any light, perfect for those grey winter days. Our recent rainy weather proved to be perfect for testing this feature, and after running the charge down, I placed the HybridLight in the kitchen window to capture the ambient light coming through: success! The HybridLight was able to fully charge on a sunless day, making this a perfect backup for any type of emergency (no need to scramble for batteries). If only I had this lantern during Hurricane Sandy….
In addition to charging with any light source, the HybridLight provides eight hours of light on a full charge AND is able to hold a charge for years. The solar lantern came out of the box with a charge, allowing us to use the light immediately. We put the HybridLight to good use that first evening, hitting the streets to provide my son with Halloween safety lighting. Because the lantern is water resistant, there was no need to worry when Trick or Treat night turned into a typical wet, fall evening. The LED lights provide light you would imagine coming from a larger lamp, and the lantern doesn’t get hot to the touch (another great safety feature). Because the HybridLight doesn’t get hot, we were able to place it in a plastic pumpkin, illuminating the wagon in which my son rode on Halloween.
The HybridLight allows you to easily navigate between solar and battery power. When solar powered, the lamp provides a dimmer light, as illustrated in the below photo:
Constructed from durable plastic, the HybridLight is an excellent (difficult to break) option for households with small children; no need to worry about burnt fingers or broken glass. My winter emergency plan is in place, and the HybridLight Solar Lantern is the perfect child-safe backup lighting option for us. If you’re a camping family, you need to add this lantern to your gear!
